The wait is over. On Friday, August 21st, the 2026/27 Premier League season kicks off with a match that in many ways tells the story of English football. Reigning champions Arsenal will host newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal must defend their title
Arsenal enter the season as reigning champions after an excellent 2025/26 season, where Mikel Arteta's team finished with 85 points, a full seven points ahead of Manchester City.
This ended a 22-year wait for the English championship. The last time Arsenal had won the Premier League was in the legendary 2003/04 season, when Arsène Wenger's "Invincibles" went through all 38 league games without a single defeat.
The 2026 championship was Arsenal's fourth Premier League title, and expectations are naturally enormous when the team runs onto the Emirates pitch again on Friday evening.

Coventry back after 25 years

Coventry City is back in the Premier League for the first time since 2001. Under Frank Lampard, Coventry won the Championship in 2025/26, securing a direct ticket back to the top English division after a quarter-century absence.
It is almost poetic that Coventry returns in a match like this.
Coventry was among the original 22 clubs when the Premier League was established in 1992. The club spent the first nine Premier League seasons in the league before relegation in 2001 began a long and at times extremely turbulent period.
Coventry subsequently dropped all the way to League Two, at times playing its home games outside Coventry, and experienced both financial and sporting adversity. Therefore, the comeback to the Premier League is one of the great English football stories.
Now Coventry stands on the same stage as Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Manchester City again.
It will be difficult to find a greater challenge than facing the reigning champions at the Emirates in the first match, but Coventry, conversely, has very little to lose.

From 22 clubs in 1992 to the world's biggest football product
The Premier League was born in 1992.
The then-First Division clubs wanted greater commercial freedom and the ability to negotiate TV deals themselves, among other things. The 22 clubs left the Football League, and the new Premier League saw the light of day.
The first season began on August 15, 1992. Brian Deane of Sheffield United scored the first Premier League goal in history, and Manchester United ended up as the first champions.
At that time, there were 22 teams, meaning 42 league games for each club. From 1995/96, the league was reduced to the 20 teams and 38 games that we know today.
But the really big revolution happened off the pitch.
Television became crucial.
The deal with Sky changed the way English football was presented, marketed, and financed. Monday Night Football, large TV productions, and a far more aggressive commercial approach turned the Premier League into a product that could be sold far beyond the UK.
Since then, the development has only continued.
Why is the Premier League the strongest league in the world?
One can, of course, debate where the most beautiful or most tactically interesting football is played. Serie A, LaLiga, and the Bundesliga all have periods and qualities where they can measure up to the English.
But when we talk about the overall strength from number one to number 20, the Premier League is difficult to ignore today.
Economics plays a gigantic role. Premier League clubs collectively generated around £6.8 billion in revenue in the 2024/25 season. This gives even clubs outside the traditional top six financial strength that many historic major clubs in other European leagues struggle to match.
This can be seen in the transfer market.
Where a promoted team or a mid-table Premier League club previously primarily signed players from the Championship or smaller English clubs, today they can compete for established national team players from the Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, and LaLiga.
This means that quality has spread further down the league.
A match against number 14 or 15 in the Premier League is not necessarily a break for a top team. There are financial muscles, skilled international coaches, and top players in virtually all 20 clubs.
At the same time, the league has become extremely international. Players, coaches, and owners come from all over the world, and Premier League matches are shown in virtually every corner of the globe.
It is no longer just England's best football league. It has become one of the world's largest recurring sports products.
