The Maradona retro shirt was originally designed for the 1994 World Cup in the USA and featured Argentina's classic Albiceleste colours with the iconic light blue and white stripes. However, the design stood out with its black details and stripes, which sparked debate within the Argentine Football Association.
The then-president of the association, Julio Grondona, reportedly did not want to approve the design, which meant that Adidas had to create a new version for the finals themselves. However, production of this edition had already begun, making the model one of the more special and sought-after Argentina shirts from the period.
